Our Crystal Ball Game Is Strong – Gleyber Torres Promoted to Myrtle Beach

It happened just as we thought it would. As soon as South Bend was eliminated (or nearly eliminated), Gleyber Torres was promoted to Myrtle Beach. Word began to leak last night and it became official this afternoon.

The Cubs’ number one prospect is following the pattern set by other top Cub prospects who were promoted late in the season to experience some playoff baseball. It happened for Albert Almora in 2012 and Kris Bryant was moved to experience the playoffs in Daytona in 2013. Last year, Mark Zagunis showed up in Kane County with Chesny Young to help the Cougars down the stretch in August and on to a Midwest League Championship.

At South Bend, Torres hit .293 with 3 HRs and a team-leading 62 RBIs from the second spot in the lineup. He also stole 22 bases. Last week, he was named the #1 Prospect in the Midwest League. Torres is in the lineup tonight for Myrtle Beach, hitting ninth.

Going along with Torres is the ultra-hot Jeffrey Baez, who hit .348 with 8 HRs with 28 RBIs, and 25 SBs in just the second half for South Bend.

Myrtle Beach will start their playoffs next Thursday night, the 10th, at home in a best of 3 series.
