Cubs Activate Cody Bellinger, Option Alexander Canario, Recall Keegan Thompson, Place Daniel Palencia on IL

The Chicago Cubs today activated outfielder Cody Bellinger from the 10-day injured list and placed right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and outfielder Alexander Canario has been optioned to Iowa.

Bellinger, 28, was batting .226 (19-for-84) with five home runs, 17 RBI, a .320 OBP and a .440 slugging percentage prior to landing on the injured list. His 17 runs batted in led the Cubs through April 23, when he suffered a right rib fracture and, entering today, are third-most among Cubs batters. Bellinger has an eight-game hitting streak dating to April 14, and is hitting .333 (10-for-30) with a .412 OBP, a 1.112 OPS and three home runs during the stretch.

Thompson, 29, has made seven appearances with the Cubs this season and posted a 1-0 record with a 3.38 ERA (4 ER/10.2 IP). He did not allow a run through his first five outings (9.2 IP) with the Cubs this season, including holding opponents without a hit and striking out a combined nine batters in this first three games. Thompson opened the season with Triple-A Iowa (4 G, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 7 SO, 1 BB), before he was originally recalled April 12, and optioned before yesterday’s game.

Palencia, 24 is in his second stint with Chicago this season and has made seven appearances for the Cubs (8 ER, 11.0 IP, 12 SO, 8 BB).

Canario, 24, is hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a double, a home run and a .360 on-base percentage in 13 games, seven of which he started, this season with the Cubs.

The Cubs play the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field tonight at 6:40 p.m. CT in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score and 1200 WRTO.
