Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/3/22): Cardinals 14, Cubs 5 – No Stro Show in St. Louis Smackdown

The Cubs had a chance to extend their winning streak to four against St. Louis on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals decided they would not participate in the festivities and shelled Chicago starter Marcus Stroman in a blowout victory.

Slugger Patrick Wisdom actually put the Cubs ahead with a three-run home run off Miles Mikolas in the 1st. St. Louis took a 4-3 lead when Paul Goldschmidt blasted a three-run jack in the 3rd inning.

A Frank Schwindel single tied the game at four in the bottom of the frame but the Cards erupted for five in 4th. Corey Dickerson (solo) and Nolan Gorman (three-run) went deep as Stroman surrendered a career-high nine runs.

St. Louis would add five more runs, including two off Schwindel who pitched the 9th, to win by a 14-5 score. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

A team is not going to win many games when their starter gives up nine runs.

Key Moment

The pitch that Goldschmidt took deep did not appear to be a strike. It was an outstanding piece of hitting and with two outs completely flipped momentum.

Stats That Matter

  • Stroman started strong before losing it: 4 IP, 9 R, 10 H, 7 K and 1 BB.
  • Mark Leiter Jr. threw four innings of crucial relief to save the bullpen.
  • Wisdom had a career-high 4 RBI.
  • Schwindel reached base four times in addition to his work on the mound.

Bottom Line

The Cardinal lineup is very talented and they are going to jump on any weaknesses their opponent shows. Marcus Stroman didn’t have his sharpest stuff on Friday and paid for it.

On Deck

The first half of Saturday’s doubleheader is at 12:20pm CT. Matt Swarmer takes on a yet-to-be-named Cardinals starter in a game airing on MLB Network (out of market only) and Marquee Sports Network.
