Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/2/24): Cubs 12, Rockies 2 – Weather Cold, Bats Hot in Big Win

The Cubs played the second game of their series with the Rockies at a frigid Wrigley Field Tuesday night. Chicago hitters wasted no time pouncing on struggling Colorado starter Kyle Freeland and rolled to an lopsided victory. Javier Assad got the start and was brilliant, throwing six shutout innings and giving his teammates plenty of room to build their lead.

Seiya Suzuki struck the first blow with a rocket two-run homer to dead center in the opening inning. Nick Madrigal singled home a run in the 2nd and a Christopher Morel solo shot followed by a two-RBI Madrigal double put the Cubs ahead 6-0 in the 3rd.

The Garrett Cooper blasted a three-run dinger in the 6th to give Chicago a whopping 10-0 advantage.

The Rockies finally broke the shutout with two runs in the 7th inning but Cody Bellinger answered right back in the bottom of the frame with a majestic two-run bomb off the scoreboard in right field. The Cubs had no problems easily closing out the 12-2 win. (Box score)

Suzuki’s home run set the tone immediately and the Cubs never looked back from there.

Why the Cubs Won

An excellent starting pitching performance and a lineup hitting on all cylinders made this game a laugher from the start.

Stats That Matter

  • Assad is always steady and reliable: 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 5 K, and 1 BB.
  • Cooper finished a single short of the cycle Tuesday.
  • Madrigal stung the ball all night long and made an excellent diving play at third base.
  • Ian Happ got on base three more times with a hit and two walks.

Bottom Line

The Cubs are taking full advantage of a really bad Rockies team but you can see just how much talent they have on offense. There just aren’t many easy outs in the lineup. With Justin Steele and Jameson Taillon injured, Assad needs to be a big part of the rotation and Tuesday was a very good beginning.

The Cubs go for the sweep at a possibly snowy Wrigley on Wednesday night at 6:40pm CT. Luke Little will serve as the opener after pitching the 9th in this one and Colorado goes with Cal Quantrill in a matchup available on Marquee and 670 The Score.
