Cubs Roster Moves: Suzuki Activated, Carlson DFAd, Maton to IL, Roberts Recalled
It’s always much easier to share the media releases when the Cubs announce myriad moves, so here you go…
The Chicago Cubs today reinstated outfielder Seiya Suzuki from the 10-day injured list and recalled right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts from Triple-A Iowa. Outfielder Dylan Carlson has been designated for assignment and right-handed pitcher Phil Maton has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right knee tendinitis (retroactive to April 8).
Suzuki, 31, was placed on the injured list on March 22 with a right knee sprain. Prior to his injury, Suzuki hit .333 (3-for-9) with two home runs, five RBI, a .600 on-base percentage, and a 1.600 OPS in four games with Team Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
In 2025, Suzuki set single-season career highs in games (151), home runs (32), RBI (103), and walks (71) and tied career highs in runs (75) and doubles (31), while hitting .245 (140-for-571) with a .804 OPS. He was tied for fourth in the National League in RBI, seventh in homers, and tied for eighth in extra-base hits (66), and his 103 RBI are the most by a Japanese-born right-handed hitter in a single season in major league history.
A native of Arakawa, Japan, Suzuki has a .269 batting average (536-for-1,995), 111 doubles, 17 triples, 87 home runs, 296 RBI, and an .818 OPS in 532 career major league games, all with the Cubs. The five-foot 11-inch righty signed a five-year contract with the Cubs on March 18, 2022, following nine seasons with the Hiroshima Carp of the Nippon Professional Baseball league.
Roberts, 28, has made one appearance this season, tossing 0.2 scoreless innings with one hit allowed, when he was recalled as the 27th man for the club’s doubleheader on April 5.
Roberts has appeared in 41 career major league games, all in relief, and posted a 2-2 record with a 4.91 ERA (24 ER/44.0 IP), 41 strikeouts compared to 18 walks, and a 1.59 WHIP. Across seven minor league seasons, the right-hander is 10-11 with 20 saves, a 2.71 ERA (58 ER/192.1 IP), 220 strikeouts, 63 walks, a 1.12 WHIP, and a .212 opponent average against in 150 games (one start).
A native of Sparta, Tenn., Roberts was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2018 draft out of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tenn.
Carlson, 27, has appeared in three games for the Cubs this season, including one start at left field.
Maton, 33, is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA (6 ER/4.0 IP), five strikeouts, and four walks in five relief outings with the Cubs this year.
