Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/16/26): Cubs 8, Angels 6 – Ballesteros Homers Twice
The Cubs played a second consecutive night game on Tuesday, this time at Sloan Park against the Angels. The offense was cooking early for the home squad in this one, with the biggest contribution coming from Moisés Ballesteros, who went deep twice in the victory.
Carson Kelly got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd, and Ballesteros followed with a very long solo shot to make it back-to-back jacks for a 3-0 lead. Chicago’s young DH had his second blast of the game in the 3rd to increase the margin to 4-0.
Shōta Imanaga got the start for the North Siders and did a terrific job, striking out eight in 4.2 innings while only giving up a solo homer to old friend Jeimer Candelario. Dansby Swanson had an RBI double in a three-run 5th inning that made it 7-1 in favor of the home team.
The Angels made a late push to score five runs in the final four innings, but the Cubs held on to earn the 8-6 win. (Box score)
Key Moment
Chicago had a power surge in the 2nd inning to put them on top and they didn’t look back.
Why the Cubs Won
Early offense and a good starting pitching effort gave enough of a cushion to survive some bullpen issues.
Stats That Matter
- Imanaga only gave up one hit and one walk in his performance.
- Ballesteros had a walk in addition to the two homers and is hitting .355 this spring.
- Kelly had three hits and three RBI and is also having a very good spring training.
Bottom Line
The Cubs had a very bad catching situation just two years ago, but the turnaround since then has been incredible. Kelly, Ballesteros, and Miguel Amaya will all have an impact this season, whether it’s behind the plate, at DH, or even at first base.
On Deck
Chicago heads back to Talking Stick for a matchup with the Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon at 3:05pm CT. Edward Cabrera is on the hill in a contest that will not be televised.
