Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/28/26): Cubs 6, Dodgers 2 – Pitching Depth Displayed in Victory
The Cubs made a trip to Camelback Ranch on Saturday afternoon for a matchup against the defending champion Dodgers. The road team got three outstanding pitching performances en route to a fairly comfortable victory.
Colin Rea got the start for Chicago and threw three scoreless innings against a Los Angeles lineup that featured several Opening Day players. Ben Brown followed with two clean frames of his own that included three strikeouts.
The North Siders went on top after a wild pitch in the top of the 5th inning and added a second run on a Pedro Ramirez single in the 7th. Javier Assad, sans glasses, came on and held the Dodgers off the scoreboard for three frames.
The Cubs tacked on four more on a two-run single by Brett Bateman in the 8th and an RBI triple by Kane Kepley, followed by an Owen Miller sacrifice fly in the 9th. Los Angeles scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but they came up short and Chicago won 6-2. (Box score)
Key Moment
The North Siders broke the game open with four runs in the final two innings.
Why the Cubs Won
They got terrific pitching efforts from multiple members of the bullpen who may also help the rotation.
Stats That Matter
- Rea, Brown, and Assad combined to strike out nine batters and give up just three hits in eight innings.
- Kepley had a pair of hits in two at-bats.
Bottom Line
Saturday was another great example of the starting pitching depth the Cubs have available this season. They have 10 legitimate options for the rotation, including the three that were used in this one. It should be a major asset for manager Craig Counsell.
On Deck
The Cubs begin the month of March at Sloan Park against the White Sox at 2:10pm CT on Sunday. Shōta Imanaga makes his second start in a rare game that is airing on Marquee.
