Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/25/26): Rockies 14, Cubs 7 – Football Score in Mesa
The Cubs welcomed the Rockies to Sloan Park on Wednesday afternoon for what turned out to be an explosive scoring game. The road team broke double digits in the run column to pick up a win on a day numerous Chicago starters made their spring debuts.
Jameson Taillon made his second appearance and gave up two more home runs as Colorado took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Then Cade Horton had his first outing and picked right up where he left off in 2025, putting up two scoreless frames.
Things did not go nearly as well for lefty reliever Caleb Thielbar, who got rocked for five runs in the top of the 5th inning as the Rockies were ahead 9-0. The Cubs responded immediately with a six-spot of their own in the bottom of the frame. Ian Happ had a two-run single and Owen Miller added a two-RBI double that cut the deficit to 9-6.
Colorado broke things open for good in the top of the 8th with a five-run inning against Luke Little. That would be the end of the scoring with Chicago going down to a 14-7 defeat. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Rockies’ 8th-inning outburst ended any chance of a late comeback by the Cubs’ bench.
Why the Cubs Lost
It’s very hard to win when you give up 14 runs and have two separate pitchers get blown up in their outings.
Stats That Matter
- Happ, Nico Hoerner, and Dansby Swanson all saw their first action on Wednesday.
- Taillon has given up four home runs in 3.2 innings pitched this year.
- Horton had two strikeouts and kept the ball on the ground.
Bottom Line
Pretty much the entire roster has seen game action at this point for the Cubs, and spring training is really kicking into gear. Horton had a strong spring debut as he looks to become a top-of-the-rotation starter this season.
On Deck
Chicago heads to Tempe for a game against the Angels on Thursday at 2:10pm CT. Matthew Boyd takes the mound for the second time in a contest that won’t be broadcast.
