Watch: Seiya Suzuki Singles to Start Wild Triple Play

Even among the rarest events in baseball, the triple play turned by the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale stands out. Most of these plays start with a hard grounder or liner hit right at an infielder, but this one started with a single. In fact, the Cubs put all of their first three batters on base to open the game. Matt Shaw and Alex Bregman both walked before Seiya Suzuki flopped a lob wedge into right-center to start the madness.

Bregman got a good read on the ball and was chugging around second, and Suzuki was looking to grab an extra base under the assumption that the throw would go home. That was indeed the case, only Shaw had been held at third. The Giants cut off the throw and relayed to second to get Suzuki. Bregman had committed, but he was called out because Shaw was already occupying third. Shaw must have thought he was being called out as well because he left the bag and was tagged to end the inning.

This is the kind of thing you’ll only see in Little League, and even that might be stretching it. Wild, wild stuff here.

If you happened to be following online, the description of the play doesn’t do nearly enough to convey the chaos.
