Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/28/24): Cubs 6, Brewers 1 – Counsell Beats Old Team
The Cubs were on the road Wednesday afternoon to take on the rival Brewers and they picked up were they left off late on Tuesday, scoring six more runs and picking up a win.
Seiya Suzuki started the fun in the opening frame, hitting a double and advancing to third on a fielding error. He then scored on a wild pitch to put the Cubs up early. Outfielder Alexander Canario added an RBI single in the 4th to double the lead.
Jordan Wicks pitched three innings in his start, giving up a handful of singles but not allowing any runs. Caleb Kilian took over and threw gas, though William Contreras did double off him to cut the Cubs’ advantage in half.
Chicago broke the game open in the top of the 6th inning with four runs. Top prospect Owen Caissie singled home fellow top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong. Catcher Pablo Aliendo doubled in two more and Luis Vázquez knocked in the final tally to make it 6-1, which would eventually be the final. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Won
The offense was clicking and the pitching was solid, making it a pretty comfortable victory.
Stats That Matter
- Michael Busch hit the ball hard a couple of times and had a single.
- Canario also threw a rocket from left field to nail a runner at the plate in the 1st inning.
- Big left-hander Brad Wieck made his first appearance since 2021 after two injury plagued seasons and pitched a clean frame.
Bottom Line
If Suzuki and Busch hit well this season, the Cubs lineup could really be dynamic. It would also be nice if Wicks could take a firm hold of the fifth starter position after his promising 2023 debut.
