Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/26/23): Dodgers 9, Cubs 4 – Dodgers Explode Late as Lineman Numbers Flood Lineups
The Cubs had their first road game of the spring when they traveled to Camelback Ranch to take on the Dodgers Sunday. Chicago jumped out to a 3-0 advantage against Shelby Miller in the 2nd with a two-run single from third baseman Nick Madrigal serving as the key play.
Javier Assad looked very sharp after getting the late nod for the start in place of Justin Steele, who was held out with arm fatigue. The bespectacled righty tossed two perfect innings to keep the home team off the board. David Bote had his second extra base hit in as many games with an RBI double in the 6th inning to push the lead to 4-0 and the Cubs appeared to be cruising.
Los Angeles stormed back against a barrage of minor-league pitchers late in the game to take the lead in the 7th and would eventually take home a 9-4 win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
As is often the case in spring training, pitchers from minor-league camp gave up the lead late. A three-run home run allowed by lefty Bailey Horn was the big blow.
Stats That Matter
- Assad had two strikeouts in a pair of perfect innings Sunday.
- Madrigal handled all his fielding opportunities at third base well.
- Matt Mervis drew two more walks as he continues to display a good plate approach.
- Christopher Morel doubled for his first hit of the spring.
Bottom Line
The Cubs seem insistent on giving Madrigal a chance at third base and Sunday went well in that regard. It’s also nice to see Mervis continue to put together good plate appearances.

The Cubs head back to Sloan Park to host the Cleveland Guardians Monday at 2:05pm CT. Jameson Taillon makes his Chicago debut in a game that can be seen on Marquee.
