Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/7/22): Marlins 3, Cubs 0 – Cubs Flounder vs Fish
The Cubs were attempting to complete a rare 2022 sweep Sunday at Wrigley Field after winning the first two games of the series. The Marlins had other plans and salvaged the final game with an outstanding pitching performance.
After a brief rain delay, both starting pitchers were on point in the early going. Adrian Sampson and Jesús Luzardo kept the game scoreless through four innings, but the Marlins finally broke through against Sampson with a rare power display in the 5th. Charles Leblanc doubled and came into score on a two-run home run from Jacob Stallings. Peyton Burdick made it back to back homers with his first career shot and it was 3-0.
Luzardo continued to dominate the Cubs weak lineup, allowing just a single to Yan Gomes through seven innings. Chicago went down quietly from there and Miami completed the shutout win. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
The Cubs offense just is not very good and they can be dominated by quality starting pitching. A three-run deficit feels like 10 right now for this team.

- Waiver claim Kervin Castro was sharp in a 1-2-3 7th inning on Sunday.
Stats That Matter
- Sampson deserved a better fate on Sunday but it was a solid effort: 6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 4 K, and 1 BB.
- This is the third time Chicago has been shut out in their last seven played.
Bottom Line
When the Cubs attempt to get back to contention they are going to need a big upgrade offensively. The current lineup is just not enough for a good team.
