Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/28/22): Cubs 4, Reds 2 – Brennen Davis Hits Game-Winning Bombski

The Cubs traveled to Goodyear to take on the Cincinnati Reds for a rare night game on Monday and Marcus Stroman looked very good after a bit of a slow start. A couple of Chicago’s top prospects were able to key the offense in a victory that saw the Cubs come back from an early deficit.

The Reds jumped out to a lead on a Kyle Farmer RBI groundout in the 1st inning. The Cubs tied the score when prospect Alexander Canario, acquired in the Kris Bryant trade, singled in the 2nd. Cincinnati catcher Aramis Garcia then took advantage of a rare Stroman hanger, hitting a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

Chicago went ahead for the first time in the top of the 8th when top prospect Brennen Davis blasted a two-run bombski to center field. Hard-throwing reliever Ethan Roberts was able to close out the 4-2 victory. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Won

They were able to hold the Reds off the board after the 2nd inning which gave the offense enough time for a late rally.

Key Moment

Davis has had a huge spring and if he keeps doing this kind of stuff in Iowa he will be banging down the door for a call-up by May. This dinger went 400+ feet to the opposite field and the swing looked effortless.

Stats That Matter

  • Stroman was so efficient in his final two innings (11 pitches) that he finished his day throwing a sim inning in the bullpen: 4 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 K, and 3 BB.
  • Alfonso Rivas had two hits and a walk as he continues to fight for a roster spot.
  • Jonathan Holder, another potential late-inning reliever, had a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.

Bottom Line

Stroman looks very good and he’s getting a lot of grounders, exactly what you want to see from him. Davis is turning heads and building a ton of excitement going in to the season.

On Deck
