Cubs Promoting Utilityman Trent Giambrone from Iowa

According to Jon Heyman, the Cubs are calling up utilityman Trent Giambrone for the final few days of the season. Though it hasn’t been made official yet, the assumption is that Nico Hoerner will head to the IL to clear a spot for Giambrone. Patrick Wisdom is dealing with a wrist issue and could be another possibility for the IL.

Update: It was indeed Wisdom who was placed on the IL, ending his season. He was not given an injury designation, which is typically a sign of being on the COVID list, but there hasn’t been official word on that yet.

It’s been a tough year for the Metarie, LA native, who is batting just .174 with a .529 OPS over 235 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa, but he has shown promise in the past. Giambrone hit 23 homers and 27 doubles for the I-Cubs in 2019, which is solid production even considering the bouncy balls and the hitter-friendly PCL ballparks. He also played well in spring training back in 2020 and was putting together a solid case for the big club before the pandemic put a stop to things.

This isn’t really an audition since there are only five games left in the season, but it’s a nice reward for a guy who had been putting up solid offensive numbers while playing all over the field for the past few years.
