Cubs Place José Lobatón on 60-Day IL, Select Taylor Gushue from AAA

The Cubs have placed catcher José Lobatón on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain suffered at the end of Tuesday’s loss. To replace him on the roster, they have selected catcher Taylor Gushue from Triple-A Iowa. Gushue (pronounced GUSH-ooh) will wear uniform number 57 and is available for Wednesday’s game against the Brewers. He will be making his major league debut if he enters the game.

The 27-year-old is hitting .272 with six doubles, five home runs and 27 RBI in 36 games for Iowa after signing a minor league deal with Chicago in November of last year. A switch-hitter, he is batting .270 with a .756 OPS against left-handed pitchers, which could factor with Milwaukee’s staff.

In seven minor league seasons in the Pirates (2014-16), Nationals (2017-19) and Cubs chains, Gushue has a .242 average with 101 doubles, nine triples, 62 home runs and 291 RBI in 546 games. He reached the Triple-A level for the first time in 2018 after he was named a 2018 Eastern League mid-season All-Star.

Gushue is the Cubs’ fifth backup catcher of the season so far.
