Reports of MiLB’s Demise Have Been Exaggerated, Though Maybe Just a Little

Shortly after Lookout Landing reported that “messaging went out Wednesday that there will not be a minor league season in 2020,” multiple reports contradicted that information. Just in case JJ Cooper and Jeff Passan aren’t enough for you, Cubs Insider can additionally confirm that no formal announcement has been made regarding the 2020 MiLB season.

To be fair to LL’s Joe E. Doyle, the minor league season almost certainly will be canceled at some point in the not too distant future. What’s more, the idea of expanding MLB rosters and bringing prospects back to their respective spring training sites for additional development and some kind of league play is very plausible.

But it’s highly unlikely there would be any firm decisions made on the minors prior to getting things sorted out at the highest level. After all, roster size and the location(s) being utilized for the restart of the MLB season will determine what happens to the minors, and none of that is really close to being determined yet.

So while some of the details of the initial report may be based more on speculation than fact, it’s not at all inconceivable that we’ll see something concrete in the next few weeks.
