Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/5/19): Brewers 13, Cubs 10 – Pitching Nightmare Continues for Cubs

These recaps are starting to become very repetitive. Another game, another exhibition of total inability for Cubs pitching to get anyone out. Friday night it was the Brewers’ turn to feast on the buffet line that is the Chicago pitching staff.

The home team piled up 13 runs, including eight off of starter Jose Quintana, who had only allowed 13 total runs to the Brewers in 11 previous starts. Another late Cubs rally came up short and the road team’s record fell to 1-6. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

The 13 runs allowed by the Cubs brought their season total to 59 in just seven games. That calculates to a little bit over eight runs a game. Quintana put his team in an 8-0 hole that they could never climb out of.

Key Moment

Quintana retired Christian Yelich on an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning and it looked possible that he could escape with just a 3-0 deficit. Instead, Ryan Braun did what he does best, launching a three-run jack to give the Brewers a six-run lead.

Stats That Matter

  • The eight runs allowed by Q were more than half of the 13 career runs he had allowed to Milwaukee in his career previously.
  • Carl Edwards Jr. got another chance on the mound and promptly surrendered a two-run homer to Orlando Freaking Arcia. I’m at a loss for words at the moment, it’s just bad for Edwards.
  • Daniel Descalso had three hits, including a long three-run bomb. See what happens when you sign free agents.
  • Willson Contreras reached base three times and blasted a solo homer.

Bottom Line

The Cubs can’t get anybody out this season. I have been trying to remember a year their pitching struggled this much to start a season. I honestly can’t think of one, This is a huge problem and it has to get fixed soon or the snowball of losses will keep building.

On Deck

The Cubs try to figure something out Saturday night at Miller Park. The 6:10pm CT matchup features Cole Hamels and Corbin Burnes. Fox Sports One and NBC Sports Chicago have the telecast and 670 The Score has the radio feed.
