CI Recap (5/2/18) – Rockies 11, Cubs 2: A Garbage Game, But Only Counts As One

The Rockies gave the Cubs a beatdown on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field. They jumped all over Yu Darvish and kept adding on runs against the Chicago bullpen. Colorado starter Tyler Anderson shut down the Northsiders’ offense in seven strong innings. (Box score)

Why the Cubs Lost

Rockies hitters played home run derby with the wind blowing out at the Friendly Confines. They hit four homers, including two from Nolan Arenado. Darvish was responsible for three of the longballs.

Key Moment

With one on and one out in the top of the 1st, Arenado hit a homer off of Darvish. The 440-foot bomb went out to dead center and gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead.

Stats That Matter

• Darvish struggled again: 4.1 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 8 K, and 3 BB. He has a 6.00 ERA and a 0-3 record and was booed (not Yuuuuuued) off the mound Wednesday. It’s hard what to say what is wrong because his stuff is nasty, hitting 97 mph on the gun at one point. The results have not been good, however, and it has to start being a concern for the Cubs at this point.
• Anthony Rizzo is showing signs of life, hitting a home run and a single in four at-bats on Wednesday.
• The Cubs offense scored fewer than four runs again, the eighth straight game they have failed to score more than three. It’s hard to win consistently with so little offense.

Bottom Line

Despite the avalanche of Rockies runs, this loss only counts as one in the standings. The Cubs need to regroup for a big series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Some run support for Jose Quintana would probably be a good idea.
