CI Recap (4/2/18) – Cubs 0, Reds 1: Cubs Shut Out for Second Straight Game
The Cubs headed into Cincy with hopes that they could get their offense on track. Unfortunately, they were befuddled by Reds starter Tyler Mahle. Another Tyler, Chatwood, made his Cubs debut and pitched valiantly in the loss, allowing the only run of the game to score on a groundout. Overall, this game went by quick and there wasn’t much offense for either sides, as the score indicates. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
As was the case yesterday, the Cubs could not generate any offense. Unlike yesterday, they were not able to get much good contact on the ball and had very few opportunities to hit with men on base.
Key Moment
The Cubs loaded the bases in the 8th inning with two outs and Anthony Rizzo coming up to the plate. Unfortunately, he struck out on a high fastball to end the inning.
Stats that Matter
- The Cubs went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Inability to produce in this situation has plagued them since last year and has continued to be an issue so far this season.
- Tyler Chatwood struck out four and walked six in his six innings of work.
- Kyle Schwarber drew two walks today and is looking pretty good at the dish so far this year.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have been a feast or famine team so far on offense, but they’ll need to score runs consistently in order to make this thing work. They are currently in fourth place in the NL central with a 2-3 record.
