Cubs Outright Leonys Martin, Claim Cory Mazzoni, Add Matt Carasiti to 40-Man

While not the big, exciting moves we are all waiting for this offseason, the Cubs reorganized the 40-man roster today. Between two additions and one subtraction, they now have 34 spots committed.

Leonys Martin, who served as a defensive replacement/pinch runner after being acquired before the waiver trade deadline, was outrighted off the 40-man roster and placed on the AAA roster. Martin is probably best remembered for his insane catch to end the Cardinals’ playoff hopes the night after the Cubs clinched the Central.

The Cubs also selected the contract of AAA reliever Matt Carasiti, who was acquired from the Rockies in late June for Zac Rosscup. Carasiti pitched in 19 games for the Iowa Cubs, posting a 4.66 ERA with 25:10 K:BB ratio.

The final move was claiming reliever Cory Mazzoni off waivers from the San Diego Padres. While most of his 2017 was spent in the minors, Mazzoni did appear in six games games for the Fathers, posting a rough 13.50 ERA over eight innings. He fared much better in his 30.1 IP between the AZL and PCL, posting a 0.59 ERA with a 48:3 K:BB ratio.

Sounds kinda like one of those strike-thrower types the Cubs said they were going to target.
