Waiver Deadline Deal: Cubs Acquire Leonys Martin for Cash/PTBNL

The Cubs have acquired outfielder Leonys Martin from the Seattle Mariners for cash or a player to be named later.

Martin struggled at the MLB level in 2017, slashing just .174/.221/.287 in 34 games with Seattle. But he has seen much better results at AAA, slashing .307/.348/.494 with 11 home runs and 25 stolen bases in 31 attempts.

Martin will have to be added to the 40-man roster in order to join the Cubs, which means another player will have to lose his spot. That said, perhaps the Cubs view Martin in the same way they did Quentin Berry for the stretch run in 2015. At the very least, Martin can add defensive value in the outfield and speed on the basepaths.
