Cubs Option Grimm, Recall Pena
The Cubs announced a roster move Friday morning, recalling righty Felix Pena to Chicago and sending Justin Grimm down to AAA Iowa. We saw Grimm shuttled back and forth between the two levels last season too, and his acceptance of the moves endeared him to fans. His improved performance helped too.
Grimmer has been striking opponents out at a decent clip (10.22 per 9), but he’s walking a wholly unacceptable 5.64 per 9 innings and is allowing 3.65 home runs in that same relative period. Not good.
Pena is cut from a similar cloth in terms of his rate stats and has shown propensity to miss the zone, but he’s not as prone to giving up the longball. Given the depth of the bullpen, this may not have much impact on team in a big sense, though it’s a move that could bear fruit.
