I am Superman, and I Can Do Anything – Arrieta Reigns Supreme
Jake Arrieta simply cannot be stopped. He is a man on a mission, utterly dominating, the baseball version of Michelangelo’s David. He’s an athlete and an artist. Tonight he was all that and more.
Jake Arrieta threw lightening tonight, he threw a no-hitter tonight. It’s simply incredible to watch this team, these players, and most significantly tonight, this pitcher. WOW!
Jake threw 119 pitches, 71 of them strikes. He struck out six batters and didn’t appear overpowering, he was just able to throw the ball any where he wanted it to go. The ball was on a string. Jake Arrieta is special. I can’t imagine what the Cubs’ players must feel like when they know Jake is going to pitch, but it has to feel something close to invincible.
He is Superman and he can do anything.
A few other things to speak of
There are so many things that happened in this game I may have to write a two part series to get everything in. Instead, I’ll just throw you some bullet points.
- Kris Bryant would have been the player of the game any other night. Kris finished the night going 4-for-6 with four runs, SIX RBIs and he crushed two home runs tonight, including this beautiful grand slam:
- Dexter Fowler went 2-for-5 continuing his hot streak to start the season. He drove in one run and scored three.
- Heyward went 2-for-4 with two walks and scored two runs. He’s had a slow start but looks primed to get things going in this series.
- Zobrist was 3-for-5 with one run and three RBIs.
- David ross was 2-for-4, including a walk, with three runs and one RBI.
As much as Jake dominated pitching the Cubs’ batters dominated hitting. They pounded out 18 hits and scored 16 runs. And that’s after stranding nine men on base (Box Score).
In a night full of incredible highlights, Jake Arrieta stole the show. I may just go back and re-watch it now.
