Kyle Schwarber MRI Results: Full ACL Tear and LCL Tear

We just got word about Kyle’s injury and it’s an ACL tear with surrounding ligament damage. This is a much more severe injury than we were hoping for and it means Kyle will be out for a prolonged period. Kyle may now miss the rest of the season. We will update you when we get definitive news on how long he’s expected to be out but expect it to be a longer than we were originally hoping. (UPDATE: The Cubs have confirmed that Kyle is out for the year.)

We mentioned earlier that the Cubs have several options to replace Schwarber. We’ve got word that Munenori Kawasaki has been called up from AAA Iowa. He was recently signed to a minor league contract with the Cubs so they are free to bounce him between the big leagues and minor leagues throughout the season with no concern for his minor league options.

Kawasaki is a great guy to fill the open roster spot. He is beloved by his fellow teammates and, while losing Kyle is a big blow for him and his teammates, Munenori’s sense of humor and light-heartedness will make this situation much easier to bear for the clubhouse.
