A Tip of the Recap – July 22nd (Game 1)

The Cubs played a dud of a game and dropped the opener of today’s doubleheader by a score of 9-1 to the Reds.

The Good

There was not much good from the first game for the Cubs. Chris Coghlan and Kyle Schwarber each had 2 hits and Addison Russell added a double. Russell scored on a single by Schwarber, but that was about all the offense the Cubs could muster.

They did load the bases with 2 outs in the top of the 9th after a Coghlan single and walks by Schwarber and Bryant, but Denorfia made the final out to end the threat and the game.

The Bad

Kyle Hendricks had a really bad first inning but was much better after that. The bad thing was that it took him over 30 pitches to get out of the 1st and he could only last 6 innings. In all he gave up 5 runs (all earned) on 7 hits (1 HR), 2 walks with 9 Ks. His ERA rose to 3.66 on the year and his record fell to 4-5.

Yoervis Medina was a last-minute call up today at the expense of Clayton Richard’s spot on the roster (he was DFA’d) and he was good to go for the first 2 outs on the 7th inning. After that, though, all hell broke loose. He gave up hit after hit and walked 2 to allow 4 runs (all earned) in his inning of work. It took him 42 pitches to get through the inning, so he may be headed back down after this game for another fresh arm.

On Deck

Game 2 will start at 5:10 PM (CST) and will be shown on ABC7. Dallas Beeler (0-0, 3.60) gets the start for the Cubs against Tony Cingrani (0-3, 3.47) for the Reds.
