Jorge Soler to Remain with Pelicans Through Mills Cup Finals

The Pelicans announced in a press release that the big Cuban slugger would be continuing his rehab assignment with the team through the Mills Cup Championship, which could last up to another 3 games.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (SEPTEMBER 15, 2015) — Chicago Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler is expected to continue his Major League rehabilitation assignment with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, throughout the remainder of the Mills Cup Championship Series, which shifts back to Myrtle Beach for the final three games of the series. The Pelicans are one win away from capturing their first Mills Cup title since 2000, and they will host Game Three of the set on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

Soler, rehabbing an oblique strain, has played three games with the Pelicans in the postseason, hitting .300 (3-for-10) with two runs scored, two doubles, and a run driven in. He has walked twice and struck out four times. The outfielder has played all but three innings, limited to six innings in his first game on Friday in Game Three of the Southern Division Championship, and he has served as the Pelicans right fielder, hitting exclusively in the third spot in the batting order.

It’s good to see Soler out there playing every day, but the Cubs want to make absolutely certain he’s at 100% before throwing him back into the deep end. And with this being his second prolonged absence of the season, there’s no doubt the organization wants to give him as much time as possible to get his timing dialed in. And with the expanded rosters, they don’t need to worry as much about the shell game of DL stints.

The Cubs have a bit of a crowded house in the outfield right now, but they could really use Soler’s bat in the lineup given the relatively brutal stretch ahead of them. Over the next two weeks, they have 11 games against three of the best teams in baseball, as they face the Pirates (7), Cardinals (3), and Royals (1). Here’s to hoping Georgie Sunshine gets on a roll and starts raking soon.

If you’re so inclined, Game Three of the Mills Cup Championship Series can be heard live on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. ET. The game will also air along with live streaming video on MiLB.tv.
