Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/25/21): Brewers 6, Cubs 0 – Arrieta’s Quality Start Goes for Naught
The Cubs faced a big challenge on Sunday against Brewers ace Brandon Woodruff in the rubber match of the series, but they were not up to the task. Not even another stellar effort from Chicago’s former — and maybe current — ace Jake Arrieta was enough to earn a win.
Arrieta loaded the bases with none out in the 1st inning, then Travis Shaw drew a walk to force in a run and give the Crew a lead. The former Cy Young winner went on to retire the next 15 batters he faced to keep it 1-0.
Woodruff gave the Cubs very little breathing room in six shutout frames and the Brewers bullpen added two more scoreless innings before they broke things wide open in 9th. Jason Adam was incredibly wild during a five-run implosion that ended any comeback hopes. (Box score)
Why the Cubs Lost
Milwaukee completely shut down the Cubs offense, wasting a quality Arrieta start.
Key Moment
Ian Happ walked and David Bote singled to put two on with nobody down in the 4th. Woodruff struck out Anthony Rizzo and then got a strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out of Kris Bryant and Happ to end the threat.
Stats That Matter
- Arrieta deserved a better fate: 6 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 8 K, and 3 BB.
- Adam did not retire a batter and saw his ERA climb over 9.
- Nico Hoerner made an incredible play to turn a routine pop-up into a double play.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have lost all three series against the Brewers in 2021. Milwaukee is going to be a contender in the Central with it’s outstanding pitching, so Chicago is going to have to figure them out at some point.
