Jonathan Sierra Might Be Cubs Most Talented Hitting Prospect

Among the other things I took away from my conversation with John Arguello about Cubs prospects before this past season Cubs was the influential writer’s enthusiasm for Jonathan Sierra. The outfield prospect had signed for $2.5 million in bonus money before 2016 as a 17-year-old and immediately drew lofty comps.

“You see the 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame of Jonathan Sierra and are reminded of former major-leaguer Darryl Strawberry,” Arguello wrote.

Sierra hit .264/.384/.341 with 11 doubles, three triples, and 12 stolen bases in 64 games in the Dominican Summer League, flashing potential for serious growth. The lefty-hitting outfielder was in the Arizona Rookie League last season, where he finished with a .259/.332/.368 line in 205 plate appearances. He also hit two homers, struck out in 28.8 percent of his chances, and walked at an 8.8 percent rate.

Still only 19, Sierra is one player from whom I expect big things during the 2018 season.
