Cubs Injury Update: Willson Contreras Heading to Myrtle Beach for Rehab Assignment

The Cubs announced Tuesday night that Willson Contreras will be joining the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for a rehab assignment. The high-A affiliate opens Mills Cup playoff action Wednesday against the Down East Wood Ducks, so Contreras will head to Kinston, North Carolina Thursday and will play Friday back in Myrtle Beach as well.

No word on the specific plan from that point, but I think it can be reasonably assumed that WillCo will be on the first thing smoking back to Chicago as long as everything goes well. His return can’t come soon enough either, as the Cubs only have four catchers on the roster and would have to resort to Kyle Schwarber if something happened to Alex Avila, Rene Rivera, Victor Caratini, and Taylor Davis.

In all seriousness, the Cubs could really use the emotional boost more than anything at this point. They’re looking a little flat lately and have a big series with the Brewers looming this weekend. And it’ll probably good for the young catcher to have something to occupy his time and keep him from sliding into those DMs.
