CI Recap(s) (3/18/17) – Cubs 13, Opponents 17: People Hit Home Runs and Things Happened

You know it’s bad when a dude hits a home run to the opposite field and three bloggers are all waiting until he rounds third to hear the PA announcer tell everyone it was David Bote. That’s par for the course at Spring Training, particularly when you’re talking about one half of a split-squad game against a WBC opponent.

Things were a little different on the other side of town, as Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell both went yard in a loss to the Broors. In an interesting dichotomy, the primary lineup was backed by a rotation of no-names, while John Lackey fronted the game against Team Japan.

Lackey got tagged early an often, but his breaking and offspeed stuff generated several fruitless swings. The same can’t be said for Jake Buchanan, who was thoroughly roughed up in Maryvale. Take what you will from the outings, and what you will take is very little.

Stats that matter

  • Jason Heyward was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI
  • Pierce Johnson struck out three in his single inning

Bottom line

The Cubs played two games. Neither counted.

On deck

The Cubs take on the Royals at Sloan in a rare night game. First pitch is 9:05 CT, which is super-duper late. But the CI crew will be there in full effizect, which means Evan will be asleep by the 5th inning.
