Cubs News & Notes – 12/8/16: Joy in Wrigleyville Airs Tonight, Soler Says Goodbye, Win Cubs World Series Memorabilia

This week has been a lot of fun. I flew to Washington D.C. on Sunday to attend a great event – Sports Management Worldwide‘s Baseball Career Conference – at the Baseball Winter Meetings. I stuck around for a couple of days and got to hang out at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, which is an amazing place and where the Winter Meetings were held. If you’ve never gone to the Winter Meetings, I’d highly recommend checking them out next year. It was an incredible experience.

  • Today was the last day of the Winter Meetings and the final event was the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs walked away with two players, both from the New York Yankees’ organization. They added LHP Caleb Smith and INF Kevin Cornelius. In addition, they lost two players in the draft. The Braves picked up RHP Armando Rivero while the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted INF Daniel Lockhart. Read more in our earlier post.
  • “Joy in Wrigleyville” will premier on MLB Network tonight at 7 PM CT. It’s narrated by John Cusack and offers a glimpse inside the elation and celebrations the Chicago Cubs’ World Series Championship brought to life-long Cubs fans. This is a must-see so be sure to set your DVR if you can’t watch it live. Here’s a preview:

  • There are mixed feelings among Cubs fans about yesterday’s trade made between the Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Royals in which the Cubs acquired RHP Wade Davis and sent OF Jorge Soler to the Royals. Some fans I’ve heard from are concerned about Davis’ injury history, while others can see the upside if Davis can stay healthy. Regardless of where you stand on the trade, one thing is certain – we’re going to miss seeing Jorge Soler crush the ball over the Wrigley Field ivy. There were a few nice goodbyes exchanged on Twitter yesterday too.

  • Don’t miss out on a chance to win an amazing piece of the Cubs’ World Series Championship run. The deadline to sign up is December 16th to win four champagne bottles, each from the Cubs’ locker room celebrations after winning the National League Central, the NLDS, NLCS, and World Series. Each bottle will be signed by Joe Maddon with all proceeds going to his Hazleton Integration Project. Click here to find out all the details and sign up today!
